Out of the Storm

Out of the Storm

“And the Lord God spoke to Job out of the storm.” Job 38:1

Death and destruction rage through the Mennonite colonies as Red and White armies continue to requisition, recruit, and advance their positions. Ongoing strife and accompanying drought result in severe famine and disease, and the worst enemy of all—fear.

Johann Sudermann works with Benjamin Janz to secure permission for Mennonite emigration, but they are faced with seemingly insurmountable obstacles at every turn. Meanwhile, Katarina attempts to sustain her family and friends amid chaos and uncertainty, and Paul Gregorovich Tekanin tries to survive in anonymity.

The Mennonites of South Russia face a fierce struggle for faith and survival as their dreams are dashed one by one, yet they cling to the hope that God will yet intervene and speak to them as he did to Job, “out of the storm.”

Janice Dick knows how to paint scenes that appeal to all the senses...pockets of language sparkle.
Janice Dick has crafted a very interesting story of one of the most turbulent periods in Mennonite History, the Russian Revolution. Her two previous books are well written, and are obviously based on considerable research. The story is compelling enough to be of interest to any reader.
Janice's books are carefully researched and reflect a conscientious attention to the details of history...but they are anything but dry history; her characters come alive in the reader's imagination. These absorbing stories have given us a new appreciation for a people that have refused to be molded to the world's standards.
I am deeply moved by your book...This book is a tremendous gift to the Mennonite church as well as to the global community.
Janice Dick tells an intricate tale of persecution, courage, and passion in Out of the Storm. Lovers of historical fiction will delve deep into this story and not want to give it up until the final page is turned.
Janice Dick, having become thoroughly familiar with the calamitous events featured in Out of the Storm, weaves a story of failure and faith in adversity.
Enjoyed reading all this series.would like to read more books from the author.
This is a wonderfully researched historical novel (emphasis on historical!). The series of 3 is just in the packaging. In fact, the three are really one consistently delivered story! The writer so accurately captures the Mennonite values & character. I thank you as a woman and as a fellow ethnic. The review for "Out of the Storm"" applies to the series. This should be a Must Read for all Mennonites ... partcularly new members and the younger generation!
This book is a fairly accurate, if fictional, account of the Mennonites leaving the Russia after the Bolsevik revolution. Having had relatives who had to do this very thing and others who have researched the situation, it is a great depiction of what they went through. There was definitely discrimination and persecution involved. It is very worth reading.
With the publication of this third novel, Out of the Storm, Janice Dick has competed her moving and stimulating trilogy. Dick confronts, in a finely nuanced fashion, the dilemma many Mennonites felt about leaving the emerging Soviet state and starting life in Canada, the country that was to become for them the true Promised Land.
