Book Review: Scars by Kevin Dautremont

A riveting medical mystery novel.

In brief, Dr. Derek Kessler is new in town, and has already made some enemies due to his faith and their need for a scapegoat.

Lawyer Rebecca Andrychuk would love to get to know Dr. Kessler better, but he is distant and hurting after personal losses.

When a murder turns the law against a friend, Derek does what he can to bring about justice, but things go from bad to worse.

This story is a page-turner to the very end, firmly holding reader interest.

Because the author, Kevin Dautremont, is a doctor, the references to medical procedures and hospital protocol are accurate. The terminology is specific but not distracting. Rather, it makes the story more believable.

The setting is clear and well-described, a good backdrop to the story. The plot twists and turns, drawing the reader along with it. But my favourite element is the characters, who are neither villains nor heroes, but ordinary people with reasons for their actions and attitudes. I appreciate the character arcs and the tension they contribute to the final resolution. I came away with a sense of resonance; there were takeaways, strong themes and hope in the face of tough reality.
