One of the best historical novels I’ve read in a long while. Stellar research, multi-dimensional and highly motivated characters, strong themes and an unpredictable plot.
This story involves characters on both sides of the second world war. Of course, there is mention of some truly heinous historical persons, but the antagonist tends to draw the reader into his reasoning, and is not the proverbial villain. However, choices are made that affect many lives along the way.
The lead characters share a deep love that endeavors to overcome the trials and the difficult times that challenge them. But will love be enough to transcend doubt and fear?
I especially appreciated the subplot of the “lost children” who were taken in by people who believed in God and basic humanity and decency.
A gripping read, with many takeaways to consider long after the story is done.
